LED: First Impressions are Lasting Ones

The initial reactions from those who switch to LEDs from incandescents or fluorescents are always positive. From the brighter and cleaner light output to energy savings and the over all aesthetic quality they bring—what is there not to like?

It’s later in many a LED’s life, sometimes as soon as a year, they begin to show their true colors and you’ll begin to see not all LEDs are created equal.

Get Tested

Consumer Electronics and their components must pass rigorous testing and certification before they can be marketed. Many of these certifications are proudly labeled directly on the products they have vetted. If an LED light is not certified or tested by a recognized laboratory—AVOID IT.Many brands including Noribachi are reviewed by organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), DesignLights Consortium (DLC), Edison Testing Laboratory (ETL) Intertek, and ENERGY STAR as some of its tests and certifications. Our LEDs have CRIs between 85 and 95.

Color Rendering Index (CRI)

This rating on a scale of 100, with sunlight being 100, measures the quality of light in how much of the object’s color is preserved. Low- & high-pressure sodium lights produce especially warm light, but they have much lower CRI ratings. Noribachi LEDs, although customizable in color temperature, typically produce a bright white light that is closer to daylight, meaning they have a higher CRI.

The Price is Right

LEDs may not be the cheapest alternative at the moment, but in terms of quality, reliability, and longevity, Noribachi’s bespoke retrofitting services are the best option for getting what you want and keeping it that way.The value we place in our lights does not lie in the quality components we use, but rather in the commitment to our customers who trust our products as much as we do. We stick with our customers from the day we call them to the moment we solve an issue five years down the line and beyond.

Luminous Flux (Lumens)

Lumens measure a light’s brightness. The higher the lumen count, the brighter the light is. Comparing lumen output among similar wattage LEDs, notice those with significantly less lumens and AVOID THEM.

Noribachi’s LEDs have lumen counts ranging from 896 lumens for our smallest modular light engine to our 378-led floodlight, which is rated at 66,426 lumens.

Origin

The manufacturing origin of a LED bulb is important when it comes to the quality of the product involved. Lights that are mass-produced in China are significantly cheaper, yet the quality of their product is significantly less than those manufactured in the United States. The attention to detail and engineering rigor that goes into our lights is impeccable. Noribachi specializes in custom retrofit lighting and we build every one of our lights to spec by hand in our Los Angeles warehouse. After assembly, our lights are tested for industry standard performance and must meet a strict set of criteria before being shipped to our customers

Lifetime

One of the aspects of LED lighting that skeptics have been most ready to criticize are the technology’s claims of 50-100,000 or longer hours of operational life. The good news is that many of those fears have been assuaged thanks both to LED installations’ successfully maturing, and a variety of independent tests conducted by watchdog groups.Last fall Consumer Reports performed the second check of their “marathon” LED light test. The bulbs, a range of commonly available screw-in bulbs, had been running nonstop for 12,500 hours. As of now, a few LED bulbs have “burned out,” despite being rated at 50,000 hours which would be the equivalent of 17 years if they ran for 8 hours a day.Generally, LEDs can shine brighter, longer because of the way they emit light. LEDs also last longer if they are used in colder applications such as outdoors in a colder climate or a food storage facility. Many of Noribachi’s LEDs have lifetimes upwards of 100,000 hours.

Warranty

In the event that your LEDs fail, you will want a manufacturers warranty to support your purchase—after all LEDs are an investment set to pay you back over time in savings. Noribachi offers a limited 5-year warranty on all of its retrofit LED products as well as an optional 10-year warranty for purchase. Some manufacturers will not consider a customer’s lights a failure even if 10% of the individual diodes do not turn on.From a simple phone call to major repair, we will continue to help our customers until the issue is solved. Our customers can rely on us to be there as much as they rely on their lights to turn on in an instant.

With these tips in your back pocket, you’ll be able to shop smarter when you’re in the market for LEDs.
