Running the existing 400W metal halide lamps for 15 hours per day, 7 days a week in our 8,160 aquatics center became very costly for the school. The location of the lamps and ballast also made it difficult to maintain because the work had to be scheduled during off-work hours.
Working with JACOMB Lighting, Noribachi engineered 68 LED light engine retrofits to replace the metal halide lamps and ballasts. With the LED replacements, the foot-candle measurement increased from 50 to 70 and decreased overall energy consumption by 72%. The LED retrofit project also qualified for the local utility incentive program providing rebates that covered approximately half of the total cost of the overall retrofit project.
“In the past 6 years we’ve had 60 of the 68 400W metal halide bulbs burn out in the Aquatics Facility. Typically, they lasted only 2 1/2 years and made the pool look yellow and the blue water look green. They also used an enormous amount of energy and made an already humid environment even hotter,” said Brian Wilcox, West Irondequoit Central School District, Aquatics Director. “For the LED retrofit, we were able to use the existing lighting system, minimizing pool down time. Keeping the indirect lighting system is important in the aquatic environment. The installation took approximately 5 days and the company was able to start on time and finish the project ahead of schedule. The change to LED lighting is amazing. The pool area looks brighter and cleaner than ever. The LED’s white light gives our pool water that clean blue look that we love.”
